How homeowners search
How customers find contractors on Google and in AI
Contractor work is bought in long cycles and short ones. A homeowner thinking about a basement finish or a second story addition can spend months searching “basement finishing cost per square foot”, “do I need a permit for an addition” and “how to choose a general contractor”. They read, save pages, ask friends and only then ask three contractors for a bid.
Other jobs move fast. A breaker keeps tripping, a fence came down in a storm or the yard needs to be ready before a graduation party, and the search is “electrician near me” or “fence repair” plus a town name. Those people call one of the first few businesses they see.
Google answers the fast searches mostly with the map pack, built from business profiles, reviews and distance. It answers the slow ones with articles, guides, cost pages and more often an AI Overview, and AI assistants now answer both kinds. The long, researched decisions are where a contractor's own website has the most room to win, and that website is what our contractor SEO services work on.
What's included
What our SEO for contractors includes
Everything a contracting business needs from search, done while your crews are on job sites.
Research on what homeowners search
Project, cost, permit, material and repair searches in your market, the towns you serve included, and the keywords other contractors rank for that you do not.
30 articles a month
One a day, in plain words for homeowners: what a project involves, what changes the cost, which material lasts and how to pick a contractor. Each one links to the service page a reader would ask about.
Service pages for your trades
When people search a service like “bathroom remodeling” or “panel upgrade” and no page of yours answers it, we can write that page on WordPress through our plugin or on Shopify, inside your monthly article count and at most four in any 30 days.
Site fixes with your license number
Our weekly scan finds empty titles, dead addresses and a missing sitemap, and we fix them after your OK. Your business markup gets your name, address, phone and, once your Knowledge Graph holds it, your contractor license number. On WordPress, Shopify and custom sites connected through our receiver we write the fixes on your site ourselves. On other platforms you get every fix ready to paste, with the exact steps.
Links from real businesses
90 credits a month in our backlink exchange, matched by field and country first and never paired with a contractor you track as a competitor. See backlink safety.
A person on your account
A dedicated account manager and priority 24/7 support. Send a request through Help and it gets a ticket number and a reply from our team.
By trade
Contractor SEO services by trade
Each trade has its own searches. The research behind your plan starts from the services you list, so an electrician and a home builder end up with very different calendars.
| Trade | Searches people use | What we write |
|---|---|---|
| General contractor | how to choose a general contractor, home addition cost | Guides on planning, budgets and timelines, linked to your services |
| Remodeler | kitchen remodel cost, bathroom remodel ideas, how long a remodel takes | Cost and planning articles, and service pages for each room you remodel |
| Home builder | cost to build a house, custom home vs production home | Long guides for buyers who decide over months |
| Electrician | breaker keeps tripping, panel upgrade cost, EV charger installation | Problem and project articles, with articles that name electrical wiring under our safety rules |
| Landscaper | patio pavers vs concrete, when to aerate a lawn, retaining wall cost | Seasonal articles planned ahead of spring and fall |
Our plan follows your real services and towns. If you do not offer a service, it does not get a page.
Example
Example content plan for contractors
An illustration for a made-up remodeling company that also does additions. Your plan comes from your own keyword research, your services and your market.
| Week | Article | The search behind it | Why it is in the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | How much does a kitchen remodel cost, and where the money goes | kitchen remodel cost | Homeowners set budgets long before they call for bids |
| 1 | Do you need a permit for a home addition? | permit for home addition | A planning question asked early in a big project |
| 2 | How to pay for a remodel: cash, home equity or a loan | home improvement loan | Financing is a money topic, written under the rules below |
| 2 | Quartz vs granite countertops | quartz vs granite | A material choice made right before a remodel |
| 3 | Questions to ask a remodeling contractor before you sign | questions to ask a contractor | Reaches homeowners who are comparing bids |
| 4 | Building a deck: what to plan before spring | deck building cost | A seasonal search, planned in the months before it peaks |
A real month holds 30 articles. A seasonal search goes on your calendar in the three months before its peak or in the peak month, so a deck or patio article is live when homeowners start planning.
Your facts
Your license, your warranty and careful topics
Homeowners check a contractor before they let one into the house. So the details about your business appear only as your business facts hold them, read from your own site or given by you, never guessed. The Facts about your business card asks a local business for its address, hours, service area and phone, and your word always beats what the site says.
The writer never states a warranty, a certification, an award or your years in business unless the facts give it. Where an article needs a fact you have not given, it is written in general terms. Your license number reaches your site's business markup once your Knowledge Graph holds it.
Some contractor topics touch safety or money, and those follow stricter rules:
- A search that names electrical wiring, carbon monoxide, a gas leak or a fire risk gets our safety rules: careful facts credited to the kind of authority behind them, general guidance only and one note to call a qualified professional.
- A search that names a loan or insurance gets the same treatment under our money rules, never a decision about one homeowner's financing or claim.
- Our writer is barred from some claims, and every finished article is checked for them and rewritten once if one slips through: “risk-free”, “100% safe”, urgency like “selling fast”, and “the best contractor in town” unless a named source says it.
- Your own standing rules, such as never quoting prices or never mentioning financing, go in Global Article Instructions and apply to every article.
Local SEO
Local SEO for contractors
Most contractors work at the customer's address and cover a set of towns. Google lets a business like that hide its street address on its profile and show a service area instead, and your Google Business Profile, with your trade's category, your service area, project photos and reviews, is most of what the map pack reads.
The profile stays in your hands. Connect it, and your dashboard shows its views, calls, direction requests, website clicks and reviews, and lists what the profile is missing, such as hours, a phone number or a description. You make those changes in Google yourself. You can also draft a reply to a review in the dashboard and publish it on Google. We never edit the profile, post on it or reply for you, and no one can promise a contractor a place in the map pack.
The website half is ours, as our local SEO services page explains. A service page we write on WordPress or Shopify carries local business markup when your facts hold an address with its town. Service pages carry text and markup, not photo galleries, so your project gallery stays where it is. A town gets its own article only where your business has three local facts there, such as a street address in that town, that office's hours and a review that names the town. We do not copy one page across every town in the county, the kind of page Google's spam policies call a doorway.
For listings, the Local Citations add-on puts your business in 15, 30, 50 or 100 local directories for $144 to $960, paid once, with a report of every live listing. A contractor who works from home can ask for the street address to be hidden, and it is hidden wherever a directory allows it.
Dumpster rental
Dumpster company local SEO: what changes for a roll-off rental business
A dumpster rental company sits right next to the contractors it serves. Half its customers are builders and remodelers who order a roll-off for every job. The other half are homeowners who need one once: for a garage cleanout, a move or a roof tear off. Those homeowners search before they call, with questions like “what size dumpster do I need”, “how much does it cost to rent a dumpster”, “can I put a dumpster on the street” and “what can't go in a dumpster”.
Dumpster company local SEO has the same two halves as any local business. Your Google Business Profile carries the map pack for “dumpster rental near me”, and a company that delivers to customers' driveways can show its service area instead of its yard's address. That profile stays yours to run, and you can read it and reply to reviews from your dashboard. Your website is the half we do.
For a rental company that means articles that answer the size, price, permit and loading questions in plain words, and service pages for the rentals you really offer, such as construction dumpsters or residential roll-offs, on WordPress or Shopify. An article whose search names hazardous waste follows our safety rules, with careful facts and one note to check with a qualified professional. Busy months come back each year, so a seasonal search goes on your calendar in the three months before its peak or in the peak month.
Rental companies often serve dozens of towns from one yard, and many marketers answer that with a copied page for each town. We do not. Searches for towns you do not serve are left out of your plan, and a town gets an article of its own only where your business has three local facts there.
AI assistants
How contractors get recommended by AI assistants
Homeowners now ask ChatGPT how much a deck costs, whether a crack in a foundation is serious or which remodelers nearby do good work. The answers lean on pages that rank, on directories and on clear facts about each business, and they quote pages that answer the exact question in their first lines.
So every article starts with a plain answer, its FAQ uses questions Google really shows, and your site gets an llms.txt file that sums it up for AI assistants. Every week we ask 70 questions your customers ask in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and you see which answers mention your business, which contractors they mention instead and which pages they cite. More on AI visibility tracking.
Who does the work
A contractor SEO agency, a lead service or a freelancer?
Contractors get three kinds of offers. Lead services sell you a homeowner's request, often shared with other contractors, and the leads stop when you stop paying. A freelancer can do good work but has limited hours. A contractor SEO agency works on your own website, so what it builds stays with you.
We are that kind of agency, with the daily work run by our system: research, writing, publishing and a weekly scan of your site. Each morning our team looks over every paying project. You also get a dedicated account manager and priority 24/7 support. We are remote, so nobody visits your job site, and every article is in your dashboard the day it goes live.
Other trades get their own version of this plan. Our pages on roofing SEO and HVAC SEO services show how the searches change for those businesses.
How to choose
How to choose contractor SEO services
Whoever you talk to, ask these before you sign:
- Which of my services will you write about first, and why?
- Do I pay per lead or per month, and what stays on my site if I stop?
- Will you make a page for every town I serve, and what goes on it?
- Who writes about wiring, gas and other safety topics, and under what rules?
- Can I see every link you build and where it comes from?
- Who keeps control of my Google Business Profile and my reviews?
- Do you promise first place or a number of jobs? A good answer is no.

What we do not do for contractors
We do not sell leads, write estimates, answer your phone or connect your job software or CRM. We bring homeowners to your website, and your phone and quote form take it from there. Paid ads, website builds and promises of rankings or jobs are not part of what we do.
Your Google Business Profile and your reviews stay with you, and we cannot put a contractor into the map pack. New service pages go only to WordPress sites with our plugin and to Shopify, and they carry no photo galleries. Our safety and money rules are writing rules, not a review by an inspector or a lawyer, and articles never replace a permit office's answer. Our team works remotely, with no office near you.
Questions
Contractor SEO: frequently asked questions
What does contractor SEO cost per month?
Agencies across all fields average about $3,200 a month, and the most common retainer is $501 to $1,000, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. Our contractor SEO services are $149 a month per site, everything in the plan included, with no fee per lead.
How long until contractor SEO shows results?
The first articles go live and are checked for indexing within your first weeks. Impressions usually start on narrow searches, like one project cost or a service plus your town, over the next months. Broad searches like “general contractor” in a big city take longest, and nobody can honestly name the date you reach a position.
What is included in contractor SEO?
Keyword research for your trades and towns, 30 articles a month, new service pages where your platform takes them, technical fixes after your OK with your license number in your markup, links from our exchange, weekly AI answer checks, up to 5 full audits a month and your own account manager.
Can AI tools replace contractor SEO?
Not on their own. A chatbot can draft an article about kitchen remodel costs, but someone still has to choose the search, check your business facts, follow the rules for safety and money topics, publish it, confirm Google indexes it and earn links to it. We use AI for the draft and handle every step around it.
How do I choose a provider for contractor SEO?
Pick one that shows its work and is honest about its limits. Ask what goes live each month, whether you pay per lead or per month, how safety topics are written, who places your links and how long you are tied in. Skip anyone who guarantees rankings or jobs.
Will contractor SEO get me into ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
There is no guarantee, because each assistant chooses its own sources. We do the work they draw on, clear pages that rank, and every week we show which of your customers' questions bring up your business and which contractors come up instead.
Do you write a page for every town I serve?
No. Copied town pages are what Google's spam policies call doorway pages. We write service pages for the work you really do, and a town gets its own article only where your business has three local facts there, such as an address, that office's hours and a review naming the town.
