The basics

What local SEO is, and why it matters for a local business

Local SEO is the work that makes a business show up when someone nearby searches for what it sells: โ€œemergency plumberโ€, โ€œdentist open Saturdayโ€, โ€œbakery near meโ€. Those buyers are close to picking someone, often the same day, which is why local search matters so much to a business that serves its own town.

Buyers find a local business in three places. The first is the map pack, the few businesses Google shows on a map at the top of the results. Google says it ranks them mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and the business profile is what it reads there. The second is the regular results below the map, where service pages and articles answer questions like โ€œhow much does a roof repair costโ€. The third, more and more, is AI assistants, which answer the question and name a few businesses or sources.

So local SEO has two halves. The profile half is your Google Business Profile: categories, hours, photos, reviews and your address. The website half is everything on your own site that helps Google and AI assistants understand what you do and where you do it. Many local SEO companies sell both halves together. We are honest about the split: the profile half stays yours, and the website half is ours to do, every day.

Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile: what we read and what you control

Your Google Business Profile is what Google reads for the map pack, and it is yours. We do not edit it, post on it or answer your reviews for you. Some local SEO companies offer that as Google My Business SEO services, and if that is what you need most, a local agency is the better fit.

What we do is read it. Connect your profile during setup, and your dashboard shows your profile, its views, calls, direction requests and website clicks, and your reviews, next to the rest of your search data. When a review comes in, you can ask for a draft reply in your dashboard, edit it and publish it yourself. Nothing reaches Google until you press Publish.

Google's own advice for the profile is plain, and it is worth an hour of your time: fill in every field, pick the categories that match what you do, keep your hours right, add real photos and answer your reviews. Your address and phone should read the same on your profile, your website and every directory. That last part is where our side helps, through your site's markup and the Local Citations add-on.

The website half

Local search SEO services for your website, done for you

This is the half of local SEO that runs on your own site. All of it comes with the plan.

Local keyword research

We find what buyers in your market search for what you sell, including the words they add when they want a business close by, like โ€œnear meโ€, and the searches that name your town where buyers use them. We study the sites that compete with you for those searches too.

30 articles a month

Answers to the questions your buyers ask before they call: costs, comparisons, problems and how to choose. Each one targets one search, written only from real facts about your business, with images, schema and links to your own pages.

Service pages with your business details

When Google answers a search with service pages instead of articles, we write a service page for it on WordPress (through our plugin) or Shopify, inside your monthly count. Its markup carries your business name, address, phone, hours and service area from the facts we read on your site or you gave us, never guessed.

Town articles where you really work

An article about a town only when your business has three confirmed local facts there, such as a street address in that town, that location's hours and a proof that names it. We never invent an address or a branch.

Business markup and technical fixes

We add your business type, name, contacts and address to your site's markup, and fix what our weekly scan finds. You approve each batch, a backup comes first and every fix can be undone.

Links from other real businesses

90 credits a month in our exchange. The matcher prefers sites in your field and your country, and never pairs you with a competitor you track. Read how we keep it safe in backlink safety.

Service areas and towns

Service area pages and city pages: what we write and what we do not

Many local SEO agencies build a page for every city near you, often with the same text and a new town name. We do not. Google's spam policies call pages made only to rank for one town after another doorway pages, and a page that claims a place you do not work from hurts the trust buyers have in you.

What we write instead is grounded in facts. A service page covers one service your buyers search for, with your real details in its markup. A town article covers one town where your business really works: we write it only when the facts about your business hold three local facts there and buyers search for your service with that town's name. If you serve a town but have no address there, you get no article pretending you do.

The facts come from a card called ยซFacts about your businessยป in your dashboard. We fill it from your website, you correct anything that is wrong, and your word always wins over what the site says. The writer states only what that card confirms.

Near me

Local SEO near me: a remote team working on your town's searches

If you searched for local SEO near me, the honest answer is that we are not in your town. We are a remote team with no office to visit, and we do not meet clients in person. A local SEO agency near you can sit down with you. What we offer instead is the work itself, done every day and visible in your dashboard.

Being nearby is not what ranks a website. Research of your own market, pages that answer your buyers, a site Google can read and links from real businesses do that, and none of it needs a meeting. You get a dedicated account manager and priority 24/7 support, and every request gets a ticket number and a reply from our team. More on how that works in our page on SEO services near me.

Citations

Local citations and directory listings

A citation is a listing of your business name, address and phone in a directory, like the ones local search and AI assistants read. When the listings agree with each other and with your profile, search engines trust your details more.

Our Local Citations add-on lists your business in 15, 30, 50 or 100 local directories picked for your country and category, for $144 to $960, paid once. It takes 2 to 6 weeks, and you get a live link to each listing. A business that serves an area can keep its address hidden on the listings.

Online Directory Submission, from $299 to $1,199, paid once, is a different product: it lists online stores, SaaS products and new launches in directories for online businesses. A local shop that also sells online can use both. Both add-ons open once your plan is paid.

AI answers

Local SEO for AI answers

When someone asks ChatGPT for a good electrician nearby or a dentist who takes walk-ins, the answer names a few businesses and cites a few pages. Those answers lean on pages that rank, on directories and on clear facts about each business.

So the website work above is also the AI work: articles that open with a direct answer, FAQ markup, your business details in your markup and an llms.txt summary of your site for AI assistants. Then we measure it. Every week we ask 70 questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and show which answers name you, who is named instead and which pages they cite. More on AI visibility tracking.

Who it's for

Local SEO services for small businesses: who we fit

Our local business SEO service fits best when most of these are true:

  • Your Google Business Profile is set up, and you are happy to keep running it yourself
  • Your website rarely shows up when buyers search for your services
  • Nobody on your team has time to write pages and articles every week
  • You serve customers at your location, or travel to them in a service area
  • Your site runs on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow or another platform we publish to
  • You run more than one location's site and want 10% off every site once you have two
  • You want to see the work as it happens, not wait for a monthly report

How to choose

How to choose the right local SEO agency

Whoever you hire, local SEO experts or a remote team like ours, ask these before you sign:

  • Which half of local SEO do you do: the profile, the website or both?
  • What ships every month, and where can I see it?
  • Do you build a page for every nearby city, and what goes on those pages?
  • Where do your links come from, and can I see each one?
  • Who owns my Google Business Profile and my listings if we part ways?
  • Is there a contract, and how do I cancel?
  • Do you promise a place in the map pack? A good answer is no.

Timeline

How long local SEO takes

In the first weeks you get your audit, your first technical fixes and your first articles live and checked for indexing. A service page shows in your plan before it goes out, then publishes on its day.

Over the next months your pages start to collect impressions in Search Console, usually on specific local searches first, like a service plus your town. Citations take 2 to 6 weeks to go live. Competitive searches in a big city take longest.

Nobody can promise a position on Google or a place in the map pack by a date, and a local SEO firm that does is guessing. With Search Console connected, you see your own clicks and impressions every day, so you judge the work on your numbers.

What our local SEO services do not do

We do not manage your Google Business Profile, post on it or answer your reviews for you, and we cannot put a business into Google's map pack. We have no office in your city and do not meet in person. We do not build websites, run paid ads or write city pages for towns where you do not work.

A local agency is the better choice if you want someone to run your profile and reviews for you, to meet you in person, or to handle ads and local events along with SEO. If you run your profile yourself and want the website half done every day, that is what we do.

Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers found the most common monthly retainer at $501 to $1,000, with agencies averaging about $3,200 a month and freelancers commonly charging $100 to $150 an hour. Ask what the fee covers, because some include the business profile and ads and others only the website.

What does a local SEO do?

A local SEO helps a business show up when nearby buyers search, in the map pack, the regular results and AI answers. That covers the business profile, reviews, citations, local keyword research, service pages and the website's technical health. We do the website half and the citations, and the profile stays yours.

How much does SEO cost for a small business?

The most common agency retainer is $500 to $1,000 a month, by SE Ranking and Duda's 2025 survey of 260 agencies. With SeoVision it is $149 a month per site, with no contract and a free audit to start.

The best one is the one whose work you can see and check. Ask what ships every month, where the links come from and whether they promise rankings. A specialist who promises a map pack place or a first position is guessing.

How much does it cost to hire SEO?

Hiring an SEO freelancer commonly costs $100 to $150 an hour, according to Ahrefs, and an in-house SEO costs a salary. Our team does the work for $149 a month per site, with a dedicated account manager on your project.

How do I optimize SEO for a small business?

Start with what your buyers search, then give each search one clear page. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and your address the same everywhere, add business markup to your site, earn links from relevant sites and keep publishing. SEO rewards steady work more than one big push.

Keep running your profile. We will do your website.
