Hire an SEO Expert, or a Team That Does the Work
An SEO expert, also called an SEO specialist, is the person who gets a website found in search: they research what buyers type, plan and optimize pages, fix technical problems and earn links. You can hire one in-house, contract a freelancer or hand the work to a team. SeoVision is the third option: we do the work every day, with a dedicated account manager on your account, for $149 a month per site and no contract.

The role
What an SEO specialist does day to day
An SEO specialist's week is a mix of research, writing, technical work and reporting. The title changes from one job post to the next, SEO expert, SEO optimization specialist, Google SEO specialist or web SEO expert, but the job is much the same.
An organic SEO expert works only on unpaid search, while SEO marketing experts often add ads, email or social media to the role. Either way, the work never really ends, because sites change, Google changes and competitors keep publishing. A typical week covers:
- Keyword research: finding the searches buyers use and the pages that win them today.
- Content: writing briefs or articles, and improving titles, headings and internal links on existing pages.
- Technical SEO: making sure Google can crawl and read the site, and fixing redirects, sitemaps, canonicals and schema, often with a developer.
- Link building: earning links and mentions from other relevant sites, usually through outreach emails.
- Reporting: reading Search Console and analytics, tracking positions and explaining what changed and why.
- AI search, more and more: checking whether ChatGPT and Google's AI answers name the business at all.
When to hire
When to hire an SEO expert
Hire SEO help when people search for what you sell and your site does not show up for those searches. Other signs: your blog has gone quiet, last year's audit is still mostly undone, traffic fell after a site change, or competitors with weaker products keep outranking you.
Do not hire yet if nobody searches for your offer, if you need customers next week, or if you cannot keep paying for at least six months. SEO compounds slowly, and stopping early wastes most of what you spent.
Then decide what kind of help you need. The useful question is less ยซwho knows the most about SEOยป and more ยซwho will do the work every weekยป.
Compare
In-house SEO specialist vs freelancer vs a done-for-you team
Three ways to hire SEO help. None is right for every business, so compare them on the work each one actually delivers.
| In-house SEO specialist | Freelance SEO expert | SeoVision | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | A salary, benefits and tools | By the hour, by the project or a retainer | One monthly plan per site |
| Typical cost | A full salary, plus about $130 to $500 a month for SEO software | Most common $100 to $150 an hour | $149 a month per site |
| Time to start | Weeks to hire and onboard | Days to weeks | The first run begins right after payment |
| Who does the work | One person, with your developer and writers | One person, within the hours you buy | Software does the daily jobs, our team watches every project |
| Articles | As many as one person can write | Depends on the hours you buy | 30 a month, published for you |
| Technical fixes | Done with your developer | A list, sometimes fixes | Written on your site after your OK, with Undo |
| Backlinks | Outreach done by hand | Often extra | 90 exchange credits a month |
| AI answers | If they have the tools and the time | Sometimes | 70 prompts tracked every week |
| Holidays and sick days | The work usually waits | The work usually waits | The work keeps running |
| Contract | Employment | Varies | None, cancel anytime |

Freelancers
Hiring a freelance SEO expert or SEO contractor
Many people who look for an SEO contractor or an independent SEO specialist end up on a freelance marketplace or a forum thread. You can find an SEO expert there for almost any budget, and some of them are excellent. The hard part is telling them apart before you pay.
A freelancer is usually one person. That works well for a clear, bounded job: an audit, a migration plan, a set of page rewrites. It works less well for the steady weekly work SEO needs, because one person's hours are limited and other clients compete for them.
One more thing the search mixes up: ยซSEO for contractorsยป means search work for builders, roofers, plumbers and other trades. If that is you, see our local SEO services.
Before you hire
How to hire an SEO expert: what to check first
Whoever you hire, a person, an agency or us, check these five things before you sign.
- 1
Work they shipped
Ask for pages they wrote or fixed on a similar site, and what moved in that site's Search Console afterwards. A screenshot of one ranking proves little.
- 2
A plan for your first 90 days
A good SEO expert can say what they would do first on your site and why, after a short look. Vague answers now usually mean vague work later.
- 3
Who does the hands-on work
Ask whether they write, fix and build links themselves, or hand a list to you. Then check you have the people to carry that list out.
- 4
Where links come from
Real sites with real readers, in your field. Networks, bulk directories and paid link packages put your site at risk. Our own rules are on the backlink safety page.
- 5
Your access and the exit
You should own your Search Console, analytics and content, and see the work as it happens. Check the notice period before you sign.
Red flags
Red flags when you hire SEO help
Whether you hire a person or a firm, slow down when you see any of these.
- Guaranteed rankings or a guaranteed number of visitors
- Hundreds of links for a small fixed fee
- Full admin access to your site, but no reports back
- No examples of their own work, only client logos
- A long contract before any work is shown
- Talk of tricks and loopholes in Google instead of pages and fixes
Instead
What you get with SeoVision instead of an SEO hire
The work an SEO specialist would do in a month, done every day, with a person on your account.
Research and a plan
Market, competitor and keyword research, then a 30-day content calendar and a 12-month roadmap built from it.
30 articles a month
One a day, sized against the pages that already rank, with images, schema and internal links. More on AI SEO articles.
Technical fixes
A weekly scan, and fixes you approve, with a backup first and Undo for every batch. On WordPress, Shopify and custom sites connected through our receiver we write the fixes on your site ourselves. On other platforms you get every fix ready to paste, with the exact steps.
Links from real business sites
90 credits a month in our backlink exchange, matched to your niche first and never as swaps. You never write an outreach email.
AI search tracked
70 prompts asked every week in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, with the competitors named instead of you.
A person, not a hire
A dedicated account manager and priority 24/7 support. Every request gets a ticket number and a reply, and our team checks every paying project each morning.
Who does the work
Who does the work at SeoVision
When you hire an SEO firm or an SEO team, you pay for people's hours. We built SeoVision the other way around. Software does the daily work an SEO specialist would do by hand: the research, the writing, the publishing, the weekly scans and the AI answer checks. Our team works on top of it.
The checks an experienced SEO expert would make by hand run on every article. One search gets one page in the plan, so we do not set your pages against each other. Before an article is written, we check whether one of your pages already ranks in the top 10 for that search. No fix touches your site without your OK.
You can watch all of it in your dashboard, or connect SeoVision to Claude or ChatGPT and ask about your project in plain words. To see the full service from the agency side, read our SEO agency page.

What we are not
We are not a freelance marketplace or a staffing agency, and we do not place an SEO specialist in your team. You do not get one named expert billing hours on your site. You get software and a team doing the work, with a dedicated account manager as your person, and you reach us in writing, with a ticket number on every request.
We do not build websites or fix load speed and hosting, we have no office to visit, and nobody, including us, can promise a position on Google. If you need a senior person in your meetings every week, hiring one is the better choice.
Questions
Hire an SEO expert: frequently asked questions
What is an SEO specialist?
An SEO specialist is a person who improves how a website shows up in search engines. They research keywords, plan and optimize content, fix technical problems and earn links, then report on what changed. SEO expert and SEO specialist describe the same job.
How much does it cost to hire an SEO expert?
Freelance SEO experts most commonly charge $100 to $150 an hour, and one-off projects most often cost $2,501 to $5,000, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. An in-house specialist costs a salary plus tools. SeoVision does the work for $149 a month per site.
How much should I expect to pay for SEO?
The most common retainer is $500 to $1,000 a month, according to SE Ranking and Duda's 2025 survey of 260 agencies, and Backlinko's 2025 survey puts the average at $1,000 to $2,500. Agencies average about $3,200 a month in Ahrefs' survey. Our plan is $149 a month per site, with no contract.
Is it worth hiring an SEO agency?
Yes, when people search for what you sell, your site does not show up and you can give the work at least six months. It is not worth it if nobody searches for your offer or you need sales next week, when ads are faster. Whoever you hire, ask what ships every month.
Is SEO legitimate?
Yes. Google publishes its own guide to helping search engines understand a site, and good SEO follows it. Buying links from spam networks or promising rankings is not legitimate. We follow the guide, buy no spam links and promise no rankings.
When should you hire an SEO expert?
When buyers search for what you sell and your site does not show up, or when SEO work keeps slipping because nobody has the time. If you have enough work and budget for a full-time person, hire in-house. If not, a done-for-you team costs less and does not stop when someone is away.
What is SEO for contractors?
It can mean two things. Hiring an SEO contractor means paying a freelancer on contract for SEO work. SEO for contractors means search work for builders, roofers, plumbers and other trades, mostly local searches and service pages. We do the website side of the second for $149 a month per site.
