The short answer
How much SEO costs in 2026
The typical SEO cost depends on who does the work and how much of it. Three recent surveys of SEO providers agree on the middle of the market:
- Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers: the most common monthly retainer is $501 to $1,000, agencies average about $3,200 a month, the most common hourly rate is $100 to $150, and the most common one-off project costs $2,501 to $5,000. About 78% of providers charge a monthly retainer.
- SE Ranking and Duda's 2025 survey of 260 agencies: the most common retainer is $500 to $1,000 a month, and 64% of agencies charge under $1,000.
- Backlinko's 2025 pricing survey: the average monthly SEO cost is $1,000 to $2,500.
- So a realistic SEO cost per month for a small business is $500 to $2,500. Agency programs for competitive national markets cost more, and the agency average of about $3,200 a month is a fair reference point.
Pricing models
SEO pricing models: monthly, hourly and per project
SEO companies price their work in four ways. Each fits a different job, so compare like with like when you collect quotes.
| Model | What it usually costs | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Most common $500 to $1,000, agencies average about $3,200 | Ongoing work: content, fixes, links | A long contract before you see any work |
| Hourly rate | Most common $100 to $150 an hour | A consultant's advice, training, a second opinion | Hours that end in a report nobody carries out |
| Per project | Most common $2,501 to $5,000 | An audit, a site migration, a one-time cleanup | Nothing happens after the project ends |
| Software only | About $130 to $500 a month for the popular suites | Teams with time and SEO skills in house | The tools find problems, you still do the work |

Price levels
What you get at each SEO price level
Every provider packages differently, but the amount of work a budget can buy follows the same pattern across the market.
| Monthly budget | What it usually buys |
|---|---|
| Under $500 | A few hours of a freelancer, a monthly report, or software you run yourself. Rarely new content or links. |
| $500 to $1,000 | A small retainer: some technical fixes, a few articles or pages a month, basic reporting. |
| $1,000 to $2,500 | A fuller program: regular content, on-page work, some link building and monthly calls. |
| $2,500 to $5,000 | An agency team on a competitive market: more content, active link building, strategy sessions. |
| $5,000 and up | National or enterprise SEO, large sites, several markets and languages, dedicated specialists. |
These ranges describe typical packages, not a promise of any provider. What matters is the work each month, so ask every provider to list it.
What drives the price
What determines the cost of SEO
Competition. Ranking a local plumber in a small town takes less work than ranking a software company nationally, because the pages already at the top have fewer links and less content behind them.
The size and state of your site. A ten-page site with clean code needs less technical work than a store with thousands of products and years of broken links.
The scope. Content, technical fixes, link building, local listings and reporting are separate jobs. A quote that looks cheap often covers only one of them.
Who does the work. A senior consultant, an agency team, a freelancer and software each cost differently for the same task. More and more of the routine work is now done with AI and checked by people, which is why prices like ours are possible.
Cheap SEO
Cheap SEO services: what low price SEO usually leaves out
A cheap SEO service is not always bad, and an expensive one is not always good. The risk with low price SEO is what is missing, or worse, what is done the fast way. A low price only helps when the work behind it is real and safe for your site. These are the warning signs worth checking before you pay any cheap SEO company:
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google, so a guarantee means the provider is guessing or measuring a search nobody types.
- Link packages by the hundred. Mass links from networks, directories nobody visits or comment spam can earn your site a penalty. See backlink safety.
- Reports without work. If the monthly deliverable is a PDF of problems, you are paying for a list, not for SEO.
- No access to your own data. You should see your Search Console numbers, the pages published and the links placed, in your own account.
- A long contract before any proof. A provider confident in its work does not need twelve months locked in.

Choosing
How to choose an affordable SEO company
Cheap and affordable are not the same thing. An affordable SEO agency gives you real work you can check for a price you can keep paying. Ask every provider these four questions.
- 1
What exactly do you deliver each month?
Get a number: articles published, fixes made, links placed. If the answer is ยซit dependsยป, ask for last month's list for a similar client.
- 2
Where do I see it?
You should see the work in your own Search Console, your own site and a dashboard, not only in a monthly PDF.
- 3
Where do your links come from?
Real sites with real readers, placed in content, are worth having. Networks and bulk directories are a risk to your site.
- 4
What does leaving cost?
Look for a monthly plan you can cancel. Ask what happens to the content if you stop. With us, the articles published to your own site stay there.
Budget
How to set an affordable SEO budget
A good SEO budget is one you can keep paying for at least six months, because the work compounds and stopping early wastes most of it. Start from what you can sustain, not from the biggest quote you were given. Six months of steady work almost always beats two months of an expensive program that then stops.
Then put the money where it buys the most. For most small businesses that is content that answers what buyers search, a technically healthy site, and a steady trickle of links from relevant sites. A large one-off audit with nobody to carry out the fixes is usually the weakest use of a small budget.
Finally, measure it with your own data. Watch your Search Console impressions, the queries close to page one and the leads or orders that came from search. If nothing moves after a few months of steady work, ask your provider why, in plain words. Remember the market reference points from above: most businesses pay $500 to $1,000 a month, and the agency average is about $3,200.
Worth it?
Is it worth paying for SEO?
SEO is worth paying for when people search for what you sell and your site does not show up for those searches. Unlike ads, the pages keep bringing visitors after you stop paying for them, so the cost per visitor falls as the months go on.
It is not worth it when nobody searches for your offer, when you need customers next week, or when the budget would end before the work has time to compound. SEO usually takes months, not days. A free audit shows how much search demand your site is missing today, so you can decide with numbers.
How we can charge less, and what that means for you
We are a software company with a team behind it, not a traditional agency. The research, writing and checks run on our platform every day, an AI editor checks every article, and our team checks every paying project every day and steps in when something breaks. That is how one plan covers work that agencies price in the thousands.
It also means there is one plan, not a custom package. We have no office to visit, we do not build websites, and nobody, including us, can promise a position on Google. If you need hands-on human editing on top of the plan, our Human Curated Service is an add-on, and for many businesses the plan alone is enough.
Questions
SEO pricing: frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost?
Most businesses pay $500 to $1,000 a month, according to surveys by Ahrefs and by SE Ranking with Duda. Agencies average about $3,200 a month, hourly rates are usually $100 to $150, and one-off projects often cost $2,501 to $5,000. SeoVision is $149 a month per site.
Is it worth it to pay for SEO?
Yes, if people search for what you sell and you can give the work a few months. Search brings visitors who are already looking, and the pages keep working after you stop paying. If you need sales this week, ads are the faster tool.
Why is SEO so expensive?
Because it is many jobs at once: research, writing, technical fixes, links and reporting, often done by several specialists billing by the hour. Software and AI now do much of the routine work, which is why some providers, us included, can charge far less for the same jobs.
What do SEO service charges usually include?
It varies a lot, so ask for a list. A full program covers keyword research, new content, technical fixes, link building and reporting. Our $149 plan includes all five, plus tracking of how AI assistants answer about you.
Can I do SEO on my own?
Yes. Many owners start that way with free tools and Google Search Console. The cost is your time: research, writing an article a day, fixing the site and earning links add up to many hours a week. Our free audit shows what needs doing either way.
How much do affordable SEO services cost for a small business?
Surveys put the most common small business retainer at $500 to $1,000 a month, and 64% of agencies charge under $1,000. Affordable SEO services with the work included start lower: our plan is $149 a month, with no contract.
How much does an SEO consultant or specialist cost?
Freelance SEO rates are most commonly $100 to $150 an hour, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers. A consultant's audit is often sold as a project of a few thousand dollars, and the fixes are extra unless they make them.
Is cheap SEO a waste of money?
Not always. Check what you get: published work you can see, links from real sites and access to your own data. Be careful with guaranteed rankings and bulk link packages, which can do more harm than good.
