Freelance SEO or a Team? Compare Before You Hire
Freelance SEO means hiring one independent specialist, usually by the hour or by the project, to research, fix and write for your site. A good freelancer is flexible and personal, but you get one person's skills and one person's hours. We are not freelancers. SeoVision is a done-for-you service: software does the daily SEO work and our team watches every paying project, for $149 a month per site with no contract. Below is an honest comparison, including the jobs where a freelancer is the better buy.

Kinds of freelancer
What a freelance SEO specialist does, by specialty
โFreelance SEO expertโ covers very different people. Most freelancers are strong in one or two of these areas, so first decide which one your site needs.
The technical SEO freelancer
Crawl errors, redirects, canonical tags, structured data, page speed and site migrations. Often a former developer. Best for a site with a clear technical problem, worst for a blog that needs new articles.
The SEO writer
Articles and page copy written around a keyword. Quality ranges from expert writers who know your field to people who rewrite the top result. Ask who picks the topics, because many writers expect you to.
The link builder
Outreach to other sites for links and guest posts. This is where the most risk hides, because some sell links from networks built only to pass links. Ask for a list of sites they placed links on last month.
The local SEO freelancer
Google Business Profile updates, review replies, local listings and pages for the areas a business serves. Useful when your profile needs hands-on care every week.
The generalist
A bit of everything: keyword research, on-page changes, a monthly report. Fine for a small site, but the hours get spread thin once content, fixes and links all need doing at once.
The freelance SEO marketing all-rounder
SEO plus social posts, email or ads. Handy for a founder who wants one person for marketing, but SEO then competes with everything else on their list.
Compare
Freelance SEO vs a done-for-you team, side by side
A freelancer wins on some rows and we win on others. This is the comparison as we see it, freelancer's strengths included.
| A freelance SEO expert | SeoVision | |
|---|---|---|
| What you can ask for | Anything you agree on, odd jobs included | The work in the plan, the same for every site |
| Skills | One person's strengths, which vary widely | A fixed set of jobs: research, articles, fixes, links and AI tracking |
| How you talk | Calls, chat, often directly with the person doing the work | In writing, every request with a ticket number |
| Availability | Their hours, shared with their other clients | The daily work runs on its own, with priority 24/7 support |
| Articles | As many as the hours you buy allow | 30 a month, published for you |
| Technical fixes | Done by hand, if that is their specialty | Found in a weekly scan, applied after your OK with Undo, or ready to paste where we cannot write |
| Google Business Profile | Often managed for you | Read in your dashboard, managed by you |
| If they stop | The work stops until you find someone new | Nothing depends on one person |
| Typical cost | Most common $100 to $150 an hour | $149 a month per site |

Cost
What a freelance SEO quote often leaves out
A freelancer's quote prices their own time. The rest of the job can land back on you, so ask what the quote covers before you compare it with anything else.
SEO software. Freelancers use paid tools for keyword research, crawling and rank tracking. Some include them, others ask you to pay for your own seat. The popular SEO suites list at about $130 to $500 a month.
Writing. A technical freelancer may hand you a list of article topics and expect your team or a writer to fill it. Articles are usually the largest part of the hours.
A developer. Many fixes, such as redirects, templates and markup, need someone with access to your site's code or theme. If the freelancer cannot make the change, you pay a developer as well.
Your time. Someone on your side approves topics, reviews drafts, answers questions and chases the work. With one freelancer that someone is usually you.
Before you hire
How to hire an SEO freelancer: six practical checks
If a freelancer fits your job, these checks protect you. They are about the person's hours and your accounts, the two things that go wrong most often.
- 1
Start with a small paid task
Before a monthly deal, pay for one bounded job: a review of ten pages, or new titles and descriptions for your top five. You learn how they write, how fast they reply and whether they meet a date.
- 2
Get their hours in writing
How many hours a month are yours, how fast they answer, which time zone they work in and who covers when they are away. A freelancer with ten clients has a busy week often.
- 3
Agree what done means
โOngoing optimizationโ cannot be checked. โFour articles published and every broken redirect fixed this monthโ can. Write the monthly output into the agreement.
- 4
Keep every account in your name
Search Console, analytics and any tool they set up for you belong to your business. Add the freelancer as a user instead of sharing your password, so you can remove them in a minute.
- 5
Ask how they use AI
In 2026 most writers use AI somewhere. Ask what it writes, who checks the facts and whether anything is invented about your business. A clear answer is a good sign.
- 6
Call a current client
A client with a site like yours tells you more than any portfolio: whether the freelancer delivered, how they handled a mistake and whether the client would hire them again.
Honest fit
When a freelancer is the better buy than us
Hire a freelance SEO specialist instead of us when your job looks like one of these.
- A one-off job with an end date, such as cleaning up spam pages after a hack or fixing your sitemap after a theme change
- Changes inside your theme, templates or code, which our plan does not touch
- Weekly care of your Google Business Profile: posts, photos and review replies, which we do not do for customers
- Articles written from interviews with your own experts. We write from your site, your brand brief and your business facts, and we do not interview your staff
- Links from specific publications through pitches to journalists and editors
- A trusted person you can call any day, who knows your business by heart
Instead
Hire an SEO freelancer, or let our team do the work
If your job is the steady monthly work rather than a one-off, this is what changes when it does not rest on one person.
No queue behind other clients
One article is written and published every day, 30 a month, whatever else is happening. Prefer to review first? Articles can arrive as drafts.
Every job, not one specialty
Keyword research, articles, technical fixes, backlinks and AI tracking all run together. On WordPress, Shopify and custom sites connected through our receiver we write the fixes on your site ourselves. On other platforms you get every fix ready to paste, with the exact steps.
Work you can check any day
Your dashboard shows each article and its status, each fix with its before and after, and each link with the page it sits on. No waiting for a monthly report.
Links with rules you can read
90 credits a month in our backlink exchange, placed inside articles on other members' real business sites and never as swaps. The rules are on our backlink safety page.
Real names, no invented authors
Articles are signed by your company, or by a real author you add, such as you or one of your team. We never make up an expert persona to sign them.
A person behind it
A dedicated account manager and priority 24/7 support, and our team checks every paying project each morning. For the bigger picture, see our managed SEO services.
Pricing
How much freelance SEO costs, and what we charge

Our plan is $149 a month per site, with the work included and no contract. Every range with its source is in our SEO pricing guide.

What we are not
We are not a freelancer, a freelance marketplace or an agency that subcontracts to one. You do not get one person billing hours on your site. You get software doing the daily work and a team on top of it, and you reach us in writing, with a ticket number on every request. The plan has no calls.
We do not edit your theme or code, manage your Google Business Profile or answer your reviews, and we do not build websites. Nobody, a freelancer or us, can promise a position on Google. If you want one trusted person who does whatever you ask, a good freelancer is the better choice, and we would rather say so.
Questions
Freelance SEO: frequently asked questions
Is freelance SEO worth it?
Yes, for a bounded job with a clear result, such as a technical cleanup or a set of page rewrites, from a freelancer whose past work you have checked. For steady monthly content, fixes and links, one person's hours often run short, and a done-for-you team costs less for more output.
How much to hire SEO?
Freelancers most commonly charge $100 to $150 an hour, and a monthly retainer most often costs $501 to $1,000, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. Agencies average about $3,200 a month. SeoVision is $149 a month per site, with the work included.
What is the role of a SEO specialist?
To get a website found in search. A freelance SEO specialist usually takes one part of that role, such as technical fixes, writing or links, while an in-house specialist owns all of it. The role now also includes checking whether AI assistants name the business.
Who is the best SEO specialist?
The one whose specialty matches your problem. A technical freelancer is the best pick for a broken migration and a poor pick for a quiet blog. Ask each candidate for work like yours and a client you can call, and skip anyone who promises rankings.
How do I hire an SEO freelancer?
Decide which specialty you need, start with a small paid task, get their monthly hours and output in writing, keep every account in your own name and call one of their current clients. Our six checks above go through each step.
Are you a freelancer?
No. SeoVision is a done-for-you SEO service. Software does the daily work, our team watches every paying project and you get a dedicated account manager, for $149 a month per site.
Can I make $1000 a month freelance writing?
Many freelance writers do, but it depends on your field, your clients and how much you write, and we have no figures to quote. SEO writing is one skill clients pay for: articles that answer a real search clearly, with facts you can back up.
