How to track brand mentions in Perplexity

Short answer

Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, so brand tracking comes down to running a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule and recording three things: whether your brand is named, which competitors are named, and which domains are cited. You can do that manually for free, script it through the Sonar API, or use an automated tracker that scans daily and charts mention rate and share of voice for you.

Perplexity is the most measurable answer engine there is: it searches the live web and lists the sources behind every answer, so you can see exactly which brands and which pages won each question. In our own scan corpus — 738 completed Perplexity answers collected over the 28 days to August 17, 2026 — 99% of answers cited at least one source, the average answer cited 12.4 of them, and the brand each scan was tracking appeared in only 25% of answers. The other 75% of answers recommended someone else. Tracking brand mentions is how you find out which side of that split you are on — and whether it is moving.

This guide covers what to measure and three ways to do it, from a free manual routine to fully automated daily scans. For broader context, see our guide to the best AI visibility tools in 2026.

What counts as a brand mention in Perplexity

Three separate things are worth tracking, and they behave differently:

SignalWhere it appearsWhat it tells you
Brand mentionThe answer text names your brandThe recommendation itself — what the buyer actually reads
Citation of your domainYour site in the answer's source listYour content fed the answer, and you are one click away
Competitor mentionsThe answer names rival brandsYour share of voice — who wins the prompts you lose

A page can be cited without your brand being mentioned, and your brand can be mentioned without a single citation of your site — the answer may be assembled entirely from third-party roundups and review sites. Track mentions and citations as separate metrics, and always record competitors alongside your own brand: a 25% mention rate means one thing if no competitor beats 10%, and something very different if one rival sits at 60%.

Method 1 — manual spot checks (free)

The lowest-effort way to start:

  • Write down 20–30 questions your buyers actually ask — category queries ("best AI visibility tools"), alternatives ("X alternatives"), and comparisons ("X vs Y"). Use the wording a customer would use, not your own product vocabulary.
  • Run each one in a fresh thread, signed out where possible, and record three columns in a spreadsheet: is your brand named, which competitors are named, which domains are cited.
  • Repeat the same list on a schedule — weekly at minimum — and compare.

A free AI visibility checker can validate the first few prompts without signup.

The catch is variance. Perplexity retrieves live and generates a fresh answer every time, so the same prompt can name different brands on different days: in our corpus, 1 in 7 prompts that ran at least five times over 28 days flipped between mentioning and not mentioning the tracked brand. A single manual run is an anecdote, not a measurement — a trend needs repeated runs of the same prompts. And thirty prompts, checked weekly with sources recorded by hand, is roughly an hour of tedious work; most teams quietly stop by week three.

Method 2 — script it with the Sonar API

Perplexity's public Sonar API returns the generated answer together with the search results behind it, so a script can automate the same routine: loop the prompt list on a daily cron, store each answer, and extract brand names and cited domains.

Budget for three things:

  • Extraction quality. Naive string matching miscounts — brands appear as possessives, abbreviations and aliases, and a rival's name can sit inside a cited URL without appearing in the text at all. You will need normalization and an alias list per brand, or an LLM extraction pass.
  • Repeats. Because of the run-to-run variance above, one run per prompt per day is the useful minimum — and mention rate should be read over a rolling window, never from a single run.
  • Cost and quota. API usage is metered, so spend scales with prompt count times frequency. A 30–50 prompt list stays modest; tracking several markets or several engines multiplies it — check the current API pricing before committing to a large set.

This is a real engineering project — small, but permanent: prompts change, brands get renamed, and the extraction logic needs maintenance as answer formats evolve.

Method 3 — automated daily tracking

A dedicated tracker runs the same loop as the script — daily runs of a fixed prompt set, extraction, storage — and adds the parts that take longest to build well: brand and competitor extraction, source-domain aggregation, share-of-voice charts and alerting, usually across several answer engines at once, so Perplexity sits next to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in one view.

That is what SeoVision does — every number in this article comes from those scans. Each project defines its prompts once; the scanner runs them daily against Perplexity and the other engines, parses each answer for brand mentions, competitor names and cited domains, and the dashboard shows mention rate per prompt, per market and per engine over time. How many prompts, and how often

  • 20–50 prompts per market is the practical sweet spot: enough to cover category, best-of, alternatives and comparison intents without drowning the trend lines in noise.
  • Daily beats weekly. With 1 in 7 prompts flipping outcomes between runs, weekly snapshots produce jumpy, misleading charts; daily runs smooth into a stable rolling mention rate within a couple of weeks.
  • Include competitors from day one. Answers are not archived anywhere public, so a rival's history cannot be reconstructed retroactively — you can only start recording it.
  • Re-review the prompt list quarterly. Buyer language shifts, and new competitors enter the answers before they enter your radar.

Reading the numbers

Three rollups turn raw runs into decisions:

  • Mention rate — the share of runs that name your brand, per prompt and overall. This is the headline number to move.
  • Share of voice — your mention rate against each competitor's on the same prompts. It shows where the losses concentrate: a prompt where a rival is named 90% of the time is a positioning problem, not a copy tweak.
  • Cited domains — the sites Perplexity keeps pulling into your prompts. This list is your to-do list: those are the publications to get featured in and the content formats to beat. When your own domain starts appearing among the citations, mentions usually follow — see how to get cited by Perplexity for the tactics.

FAQ

Can I track Perplexity brand mentions for free?

Yes — run a fixed list of 20–30 buyer questions on a schedule and record mentions, competitors and cited domains in a spreadsheet. It works as a first read, but answers vary between runs, so single checks mislead; trends need repeated runs, which is where manual tracking usually breaks down.

Why do Perplexity's answers change between runs of the same prompt?

Perplexity retrieves from the live web and generates a fresh answer each time, so the retrieved sources and the named brands both shift. In our 28-day scan corpus, 1 in 7 prompts with five or more runs flipped between mentioning and not mentioning the tracked brand — measure mention rate over repeated runs, not from one answer.

Does Perplexity offer an official brand-monitoring dashboard?

No. Perplexity publishes the Sonar API, which returns answers together with their search results, so you can build your own monitoring — or use a third-party tracker that automates the prompts, extraction and share-of-voice reporting.

Is being cited better than being mentioned?

They answer different questions. A mention is the recommendation the buyer reads; a citation means your page fed the answer and earns the click-through. The strongest position is both — and getting your domain cited is the most reliable path to repeated mentions.

How many prompts should I track?

20–50 per market. Cover category questions, best-of lists, alternatives and comparisons in the buyer's own wording, add your competitors from day one, and re-review the list quarterly as buyer language shifts.
